“‘I think there are a lot of opportunities that come with [being Mrs. Bezos], and I take those opportunities very seriously. We always look at each other and go, “We’re the team.” So everything’s shared.’”
That was news broadcaster turned helicopter pilot and philanthropist Lauren Sanchez, who opened up about marrying Amazon
AMZN,
founder Jeff Bezos in a new Vogue interview.
Bezos, 59, proposed to Sanchez, 53, this past May with a diamond ring valued as high as $5 million. Sanchez told the high-fashion glossy that she was just as stunned as the world was by Bezos popping the question, even though the two had been together since around 2019. Sanchez says that she found the ring at bedtime while they were at sea following a starlit dinner for two. “When Jeff opened the box, I think I blacked out a bit,” she told Vogue.

The profile, featured in Vogue’s December issue, also expounded on Sanchez’s relationship with the world’s third-richest man, who’s worth about $165.3 billion, according to Forbes. She called Bezos “extremely funny,” “goofy” and “the life of the party.” Yet she said their lives “are pretty normal,” despite being among the wealthiest in the world, adding that, “daily life mostly revolves around our kids.”
Both were previously married. Bezos and Mackenzie Scott divorced in 2019 after over two decades. They have four children. Sanchez has two teenage children from her previous marriage to Endeavor executive chairman Patrick Whitesell, as well as a 22-year-old son with former NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez.
Sanchez is definitely taking Bezos’s last name, though. “Uh, yes, 100%. I am looking forward to being Mrs. Bezos,” she said.
But she noted they haven’t started planning the wedding yet.
“We’re still thinking about the wedding,” she said, “what it’s going to be. Is it going to be big? Is it going to be overseas? We don’t know yet. We’ve only been engaged five months!”
““Uh, yes, 100%. I am looking forward to being Mrs. Bezos.” ”
One thing they do know for sure: Bezos will have little-to-no involvement in planning it. “Oh, God, no. Do I look that dumb?” he told Vogue.
The profile also featured a hint from Sanchez that she’ll be taking Blue Origin’s New Shepard capsule to the edge of space next year, along with five other “remarkable” women who haven’t yet been disclosed. She said the flight is supposed to “pave the way for women.” And the cosmos seems to feature heavily in their relationship; a favorite saying of Bezos and Sanchez is “Love you to space and back,” the profile noted.
Still, the interview has raised some eyebrows from readers who called out the splashy Western-themed photo shoot and gushy interview “uncomfortable” and “cringy,” and called out Vogue for glamorizing the billionaire tech titan.
“I think we should refrain from superhero-ifying and glamorizing billionaires who build their wealth by exploiting and overworking their notoriously underpaid employees,” one reader wrote under a Vogue Instagram post sharing the photos. “No amount of PR can make either of these people likable.”
